CHAPTER TEN: GOING FOR A STROLL OUTSIDE

Zeke got us home so fast, I hadn’t been able to prepare an argument, an angle, anything at all really. He, on the other hand, wasted no time whatsoever. “Ok, no more running, no more avoiding, something is going on between us, and we need to hash this thing out right now, right here.”

Angelica’s advice resonated in my head, all I had to do was open up and tell him all about Foxy’s deal, my mother, and how torn apart I was by the whole thing, but before I could open my mouth, Foxy’s warning followed up on the coattails to provide the counter argument. There was only one chance for me to get this right, and if I blabbed about my side deal and was wrong, Zeke would be able to take me over completely and I’d be lost, just like all the other hosts I had met. I needed more information; I needed more time. “Ok, fine, but it’s a two-way street. You still have way more secrets than I do. I want to know where my mother is.”

I had caught him off guard with that question, and due to that, had to wait in the most uncomfortable of silences for what felt like days before he found the words. Her…She was already gone when we got there, but I felt…I can’t be certain, but…it felt like…

“Heaven or Hell, Zeke!” I shouted louder than I had intended, but he was taking too long and needed a fire lit under him. “Just tell me!”

Heaven! All right! She’s in Heaven.

Foxy hadn’t lied, but neither had Zeke…so far. I needed more.

“Good, that’s good. Now what about me? If I drop dead right now, which way am I going? Huh?” I was coming off a little more aggressive than I meant to, and Zeke replied in kind.

That’s an easy one, you’re on the highway, not the stairway, but are you trying to blame me for that? Have you forgotten what I told you back in the hospital? God gave up on humanity thousands of years ago, everyone, no matter how good, or just, or devoted they are, all get sent away. Souls going upstairs are rarer than lottery winners, so I don’t know what your mother did to get in, but there’s no way to follow her, there never would’ve been for you, with or without me.

I found the couch and lowered myself into it, stunned by that information. Zeke basically confirmed what I already believed, but in a far larger scale than I ever knew possible. I had thought that as long as I was good, kindhearted and giving, I could earn my way into Heaven, but now things were different. Foxy’s deal wasn’t just the best option, it was the only option. I had to take it.

Don’t be sad, Liam, Hell’s actually not such a bad place, Zeke said trying to be supportive. Any and all historical figures are there; they usually hate meeting fans, but I could get you an in.
